History of Palmyra, Pennsylvania

The area now known as Palmyra was originally settled in the 1700s by two distinct groups, those of Scotch-Irish descent and the German Palatinates. Such nationalities are responsible for the culture that has developed in many small Pennsylvania towns. The Palmyra area was attractive to early settlers due to its ideal environment for hunting and fishing. Johannes Palm, who was a doctor and soldier in the Revolutionary War, is largely credited with the founding of Palmyra. Palm bought 100 acres of land in 1766 and 10 years later he established a settlement that he named Palmstown, later Palmyra.

The area continued to grow throughout the 1800s with the establishment of a Palmstown Post Office. With additional land purchases the town became known by two names, Palmstown and Palmyra. This continued for a few years, but eventually the popularity of the name Palmyra won out and became the settlement’s new official name. From there the settlement turned to transportation routes for further growth. The creation of several turnpikes was authorized in the early 1800s. Such routes include the Berks and Dauphin Turnpike which is now a part of US 422 and the Horseshoe Pike which was a compilation of the Downingtown, Ephrata, and Harrisburg pikes that eventually became a part of US 322. With the added traffic from the new turnpikes, Palmyra added hotels and other businesses to accommodate an influx of travelers.

In the period following the Civil War, which saw the citizens of Palmyra fighting for the Union Army, the small town introduced new businesses such as a grain warehouse and a lumber mill. The town also came out with its first newspaper and opened several shoe factories to further the town’s economy. The Landis Shoe Company Building was even added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. Today, Palmyra continues to grow and thrive.
